Inexpensive H/S/S Floyd Rose
By KillCookieMen
I have owned many guitars over the years and had come to discover that I liked the feel of a maple fingerboard and have always loved the Floyd Rose bridge system, but had a distinct lack of both elements in one guitar in my collection. I simply wanted to have something to fill this role and wasn't looking to spend a lot of money, so the MH-53 looked attractive to me.
When buying guitars, especially over the internet, it is (and I can't stress this enough) VERY IMPORTANT to do your homework. I went to espguitars.com and read all of the specs and read reviews on other sites for the same instrument and I must say they were all but glowing. In fact many people complained about the bridge: Condition, fit, finish and tuning stability were among the numerous complaints that I had found. After much consideration I decided to bite and give it a whirl, thinking that if the bridge was bad then it wasn't anything I should have trouble fixing or replacing, and placed the order.
It arrived in a simple box inside a larger box. The packaging wasn't bad, foam and soft crinkled paper held everything together, and all of the parts were there including the tools for the Floyd Rose. I noticed right off the bat my first complaint, and it isn't exactly unique to this guitar: Back in the '80s and '90s guitars with Floyds had hex key holders screwed into the back of the headstock. In the last ten years I have seen the numbers of guitars with this item as stock equipment dwindle. It's merely annoying but worth mentioning, I would have at least liked it included but not installed so that I had the option of using it.
Right out of the box the instrument was essentially perfect. I am not exaggerating that. After being shipped halfway across the United States the action was excellent, the frets were clean and even, the truss rod was perfectly adjusted, and the Floyd Rose was impeccable. I waited for it to reach room temperature before playing it (as it was delivered in the winter), and it just felt amazing. I have NEVER found a guitar that played like this out of the box, but I knew that it would need adjustments as I broke it in. The company gets points from me for quality control here.
Before playing a guitar with a trem, STRETCH OUT THE STRINGS. This guitar was no different. All strings have a certain amount of slack in them and you will want to work it out by gently tugging on them, and gently pulling the whammy bar up and then back before properly tuning it to pitch. I am tired of reading reviews written by people who do not know this and break tons of strings on a Floyd and complain about it being a bad instrument. This applies to new sets you install: Stretch them out. Thank you, your guitar will too.
The pickups are ok. Not outstanding, but not bad. They do the trick and the single coil pickups in the middle and neck positions are probably a little hotter than those you might find in your average Strat, but they still have a great tone to them, and I love that the bridge humbucker isn't so much more powerful as to render the 2and switch position useless. The one complaint I have about the electronics is fairly minor: In most guitars with an H/S/S configuration made today with a 5-way switch the 4th position is both the middle pickup and the neck pickup together producing a hum-canceling effect. For some reason this guitar was not wired that way. It's not really a problem, but I wish it had that option from the factory. I will just wire it up to my liking later. The rest of the electronics, with the right amp, aren't so bad that they need to be replaced so it gets points there as well.
I have played it for a few weeks now and it has not shown any signs of shoddy workmanship and it plays far better than any other in the same price range. I have had no problems with the bridge beyond what comes with the Floyd territory. I would not recommend it as a first guitar because of the nature of the bridge system, but if you find that you have an application for one this guitar is worth the price.

Great Guitar.. But Could've Been Better
By Neil
Well, first of all, just as I finished unboxing the guitar I learnt that the third string was off. It was stringed in & had somehow been torn off. Shows you how much "Quality Control" really means to some people. But it wasn't a major issue. I contacted the seller through Amazon & they promptly replied with an instructional e-mail on how to restring & a pack of strings followed up by a YouTUBE video link for the same. Now that's good service.
The guitar itself is great. Sounds great just out-of-the-box. Doesn't include any extras, save a few ESP stickers. Moving up & down the frets is smooth & the Floyd Rose Tremolo Bridge is great! The guitar does seem to be getting out of tune quicker than what one would expect though. Seems like every time I need to play, I have to re-tune it. The locking mechanism doesn't seem to be doin much to prevent this. Also, it seems to have developed some sort of a jarring noise on the sixth string. Whenever you play a note, its accompanies by a low jarring noise. That maybe due to the bridge keeping the strings too close to the frets, but I'm still trying to figure out exactly why.
Thus, only worth three to four stars. If there was a 3.5, that's what I would rate this as.
