If you're on a budget and seriously thinking about this guitar, get it.
By Brandon Davila
I've been playing for almost 22 years now, this was my very first 7 string, wanted something cheap to see if I liked it, and I do!
For a $200 guitar, I wasn't expecting much, was only praying that it would arrive in decent enough shape to fix whatever was wrong with it. Well, I didn't have to fix anything.
Factory setup was almost perfect, intonation, bridge and pickup height was almost spot on, everything except the truss rod.
Truss rod only needed a slight relief, 1/4 turn, counter clockwise fixed that.
This is a quality built guitar, you can feel it when you pick it up, far exceeded my expectations from a $200 guitar, neck it really thin compared to my 31 year old Ibanez Destroyer II. Very good weight distribution between the neck and body, this one weighs in at around 6 pounds. Tuners are..OK, not great, but not cheap either, the gear ratio isn't very tight, but have an acceptable tolerance. Paint and finish is flawless, see nothing wrong with it....it's black.
-note- all the hardware is black. The pics show a chrome bridge, but, mine is painted black.
Which leaves the pickups for last. They are junk!
I can't get any artificial harmonics out of them for NOTHING!
The low B string sounds really muddy and tends to bleed over the other strings, even turning up the gain to 10 on everything in my chain doesn't seem to help, I've made every kind of adjustment to my setup to compensate for these weak pickups and it just never gets any better.
Don't get me wrong, they aren't horrible, they are decent enough for rock and the neck PU has a nice warm punchy sound to it, but, the bridge PU, is crap!
If you play any type of "extreme" metal ( Deicide, Satyricon, Decapitated, Watain, Carcass..etc.) Invest in some blackouts, or EMG actives. BTW: if you get Duncans, get the Phase I, Phase II won't fit in this unless you have a router and are confident with your wood working skills, same thing with EMG 707's.
It came strung with a set of 9 gauge strings. Get rid of those ASP! and get a set of 10-60's, anything less will sound flimsy, especially the low B, anything lesser than a .59 flaps around like an amputees filpper.
Other than that, this is a great guitar, when I pick it up and feel my hand wrapped around the neck, it puts a smile on my face. My favorite part of this guitar is the neck, it just feels that good.
SGR (which is a subsidiary of Schecter) has great quality control, they take pride in their work, it shows in the build quality.
You can't beat it for the price, especially in the 7 string market.
Overall score is a 3, only reason it's not a 5 is because of the pickups, drop a set of actives in this thing and it will turn this $200 guitar into a $500 guitar.
If you're looking to get a 7 string guitar on a budget, and willing to put a few more dollars into it, you can't go wrong with this one.
Definite buy!
